In Season

What’s in season: asparagus, broad beans and the first strawberries

Spring is when the Southern Forests starts showing off. After a winter of roots and citrus, the tables turn green almost overnight.

Look for asparagus first. The season is short, and the difference between spears cut yesterday and spears trucked across the country is not a subtle one. Broad beans, rhubarb, spring onions and leafy greens are all coming on behind it, and the first strawberries are usually not far away.

Manjimup potatoes are on the tables year round, and the early-season avocados are starting to come good.

Ask your grower what is eating best this fortnight. Half the point of a farmers market is the tip you did not know you needed.
